Friday, March 8, 2024

PRESS RELEASE
UNITED STATES DISTRICT COURT FOR
THE DISTRICT OF NEBRASKA
March 8, 2024

Chief Judge Robert F. Rossiter, Jr., announced today that the U.S. District Court for the District of Nebraska will begin the search process for a judge to succeed Magistrate Judge Susan M. Bazis, contingent upon Judge Bazis’s anticipated confirmation as U.S. District Judge for the District of Nebraska. Information about the position and the selection process, as well as an application form, can be obtained through court’s website at https://www.ned.uscourts.gov/aomj2024.

A merit selection panel will review applications, may interview candidates, and will recommend to the court five individuals thought best qualified to fill the position. The district judges will then interview those candidates and make a tentative selection. That candidate will undergo a thorough FBI and IRS background investigation before the selection is made final and the candidate is sworn in as United States Magistrate Judge.

United States Magistrate Judges handle pretrial matters in civil and criminal cases, and, with consent of the parties, may try jury and non-jury civil cases. The new magistrate judge will be located in Omaha and serve a term of eight years. The current salary is $223,836 per year.
