Remembrance of Senior Judge Laurie Smith Camp (October 7 through October 9)

Monday, October 5, 2020

Members of the Nebraska Legal Community:

The Judges and staff of the United States District Court for the District of Nebraska were shocked and are saddened by the loss of our colleague, Senior Judge Laurie Smith Camp. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we are unfortunately unable to have a meaningful group gathering to celebrate Judge Smith Camp’s life and legacy. It is the Court’s plan to hopefully do so in the Spring of 2021.

In the meantime, we wanted to provide an opportunity for the practicing Bar to be able to pay respects to the memory of Judge Smith Camp, albeit in a somewhat restricted manner.

In that regard, please be advised that from Wednesday, October 7th through Friday, October 9th, from the hours of 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Judge Smith Camp’s courtroom will be open for you to visit and pay your respects. Given the pandemic and our courthouse restrictions, the number of persons allowed into the courtroom will be limited and will be monitored by Court Security Officers. In addition, please be advised that the Hruska Courthouse requires that you wear a mask while in the building, and that will include Judge Smith Camp’s courtroom.

Although we will not have a physical guestbook at the door of her courtroom, condolences may be sent to an electronic (e-mail) “guestbook” at the following address:mailto; SmithCampCondolences@ned.uscourts.gov. These “signatures” and comments will be shared with Judge Smith Camp’s family.

The Court family and Judge Smith Camp’s family thank you for your thoughts, expressions of sympathy, and prayers.

John M. Gerrard
Chief United States District Judge
